Hand-over ceremony of 7500 EU-funded textbooks on medical waste management

Head of EU Delegation to Serbia, H.E. Vincent Degert in the presence of Prof. Dr. Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, Minister of Health and Prof. Dr. Žarko Obradovic, Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development donated 7500 textbooks on medical waste management to student representatives of 29 secondary medical schools from Serbia. This ceremony was marked by the introduction of a new topic on medical waste management which has been developed through an EU funded project and which from now on will be taught in secondary medical schools.
„Technical Assistance for the Treatment of Healthcare Waste in Serbia“, is a project funded by the European Union with 6 million Euros, which aims to improve the existing healthcare waste management system in Serbia according to highest EU standards. This includes the development of a new curriculum on healthcare waste management for medical schools and tailor-made training for health professionals of all healthcare institutions in Serbia. In addition to the strengthening of the existing capacities for healthcare waste treatment, the project has also purchased equipment for the treatment and transport of infectious waste and it is currently funding the collection, export and destruction of pharmaceutical waste accumulated and stored in healthcare institutions over a period of more than 40 years. The project started in September 2010 and will last for 3 years.
